Biodegradable detergent and front-loading machines always preferred. 1/2 cup of borax or 1/4 cup of distilled white vinegar can be added to the wash to prevent/cure mildew.
Washing the curtain every few weeks helps prevent the buildup of soap residues, which are clogging the fiber openings and causing mold to start.
Keep off wet floors and stretched out on rod at all times to prevent moisture buildup. Keep bathroom well-ventilated. Air must be able to circulate ALL around the wet curtain to prevent mold.
Leave a small fan on in your bathroom. It will be a revelation how fresh and dry everything is. It’s a must especially if there is no window and in certain wet climates.
To line or not to line? While it is the most exciting thing in the world to use hemp instead of plastic or PVC as a shower curtain, there are considerations on whether to wax it or use it with a liner. We have been making organic hemp shower curtains and organic cotton shower curtains since 1997. We have gathered tons of feedback from actual customers as well as our own experience. The verdict is this. For people who consider this a huge investment (compared to sweatshop PVC and plastic curtains) that they want to last forever, use a liner. We have had countless customers write in that they use their hemp shower curtains without a liner and their curtains have lasted for years, 5, 10 years or longer. For them and for us, it’s totally worth it to use a hemp shower curtain on its own without a liner. It’s like planting a tree whose zone is marginal in your area – there are elements of risk involved; there might be a freak year where the weather goes much lower than your average and you might lose the tree. But you plant it anyway for the joy and pleasure of the fruits it will provide you however many years it survives. The price you pay for your new hemp shower curtain is a function of natural organic fibers as well as sweatshop-free labor. There is not much margin left over, just enough for us to continue to make awesome hemp products. We aren’t able to guarantee what will happen to your hemp shower curtain as there are so many factors involved in its durability, such as the moisture level in your area, in your bathroom, the kinds of soap or shampoo you use, and the fact that it is 100% from nature and hence will react to your local conditions, as opposed to something that is synthetically or chemically produced. If you still wish to use your hemp shower curtain without a liner, there are some measures you can take that will exponentially increase the chance of your hemp shower curtains lasting for many, many years.
The biggest enemies of hemp shower curtains? Mold and mildew. As you will see when you receive your hemp shower curtain, while we have selected the most robust, strong, and beautiful hemp weave imaginable to my our hemp shower curtain, it’s still a 100% plant-based and 100% natural product. If mold or mildew gets a start on your hemp shower curtain and multiply, your hemp shower curtain may only last 6 months or one year or two years before the mold eats away at your hemp shower curtain. How does mold start? On a surface that is constantly moist in a space that is not well ventilated. Bodycare residues like soap scum and shampoo scum are another enemy of the hemp shower curtain. You will notice that your new hemp shower curtain only takes 15-60 minutes to dry when hung off the floor or away from the side of the bathtub. As soap scum attaches itself to the curtain, the curtain will take longer and longer to dry because soap scum clogs the fibers of your hemp shower curtain fabric, which will eventually lead to mildew and mold. That is why it’s important to use borax or some other natural cleaner to wash away the soap scum. The main reason why some people’s curtains last longer than others is in the body care products they use. Some soaps and shampoos leave more scum behind on a curtain than others.
What can you do to ensure that your hemp shower curtain stays “healthy”? Ventilate. Leave the fan on for 30-60 minutes after each time you use the curtain. Make sure the curtain is off the floor and away from the sides of bathtubs. Fresh air is great. Wash your curtain every 3-4 months and hang to dry (no dryer). Watch what kind of residues your soap or shampoo leave behind on the curtain. Then, chances are you’ll notice any issues well before they develop. If you have a mold issue in your bathroom now, then our advice is to line your hemp shower curtain for sure. Many customers wax one side of the hemp shower curtain or the bottom half of one side (the side facing the water). This will protect your hemp shower curtain from getting wet, because the wax will make your hemp shower curtain waterproof. We offer this natural fabric wax that can be use for our hemp and organic cotton shower curtains as well as shoes, bags, hats, and jackets.
Liner:
Can be used with liner for longer product life, or without.
Please do not use our hemp shower curtain without a liner if you are unsure about the moisture and ventilation situation in your bathroom, as we are not able to be responsible for individual bathroom mildew issues. While our hemp shower curtains are designed to be used without a liner, if you wish to keep your hemp shower curtain in new condition, a zero-VOC or low-VOC liner is recommended. Chances are, if you get mildew on your hemp shower curtain, you would also get it on plastic or organic cotton shower curtains too. Freely circulating fresh air is the best safeguard against fungus.
